Fiji Airports has reaffirmed that the ongoing runway strengthening works and the construction of a new terminal at Labasa Airport are progressing as intended, countering rumors that these important projects have been halted. The airport is set to temporarily close from February 16 to March 27, 2026, to facilitate critical runway upgrades.

Chief Executive Mesake Nawari emphasized that this closure is essential to resolve structural issues and ensure the airport adheres to international aviation safety regulations. He noted that while the decision to close the airport is a significant one, it is vital for ensuring long-term safety and compliance.

To ensure continued air connectivity during the closure, Fiji Airways (Fiji Link) plans to add 44 extra flights through Savusavu Airport. Additionally, Northern Air will provide two daily flights along the same route, helping to minimize disruptions for travelers.

This project is part of the World Bank-supported Na Vualiku Program and contributes to Fiji Airports’ long-term strategy for enhancing infrastructure in the Northern Division. As these enhancements move forward, they promise to bolster the region’s aviation capacity and safety standards, ultimately benefiting both residents and visitors alike.
