Fiji’s kava industry is poised for tremendous growth, with the government estimating its potential to evolve into a billion-dollar sector. However, current domestic consumption rates are curbing export opportunities, revealing a challenge that needs to be addressed. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized that high local demand often outstrips supply for exports, leading some exporters to source kava from neighboring countries like Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea for re-export.

To tackle these challenges, the Fijian government is pushing for legislative reforms, with a new Kava Bill expected to be introduced in Parliament by mid-2025. Kamikamica believes that once this bill is enacted, it will enable tighter controls over kava exports, ensuring higher quality standards for products leaving Fiji. “To all the farmers producing kava, just keep planting because there’s a massive market out there,” he advised, indicating the vast opportunities ahead.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, echoed these sentiments, pointing out that current production levels fall short of both local and international market needs. The government is focusing on enhancing quality and volume of kava production to meet demand, particularly as the U.S. market shows heightened interest, especially for kava bars and extract products.

The significant growth in exports—valued at around $38 million in 2023, with the United States importing approximately $26 million—underscores the urgency for increased production to meet this expanding demand. Officials have acknowledged that meeting U.S. quality standards has been a challenge, but ongoing discussions and cooperation with U.S. importers aim to overcome these hurdles.

Moreover, the refinement of the Kava Bill will establish regulations that enhance quality control and safety measures, essential for international market compliance, including U.S. FDA requirements. This initiative bodes well for local farmers, as it promises to create new avenues for growth and sustainability within the kava industry.

Despite the inherent challenges, the Fijian kava sector shows sustainable growth potential, creating optimism for local producers and the broader agricultural economy. Together, governmental and industry efforts present a promising outlook, making the kava industry a beacon of hope for economic resilience and enhancement of cultural identity in Fiji.
