Fiji’s Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, recently addressed the issue of public conduct among government officials following the emergence of a video depicting an altercation involving the acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Sevuloni Naucukidi. The Minister highlighted the importance of maintaining decorum at all times, especially when in uniform, which includes both official work attire and culturally significant dress like Bula Friday wear.

Turaga mentioned that preliminary investigations suggest the video could have been recorded in early March 2025, as confirmed by the establishment’s owners. He has been in communication with the Commissioner and staff of the Fiji Corrections Services to stress that all officers must exhibit responsible behavior, not only during official hours but also in their private lives.

This incident has drawn attention to broader issues surrounding the Fiji Corrections Service, especially after Naucukidi’s recent appointment, which followed the suspension of the previous Commissioner due to allegations of misconduct. As the acting Commissioner works toward reforming the service, this altercation has raised concerns about professionalism within the ranks.

Turaga’s comments serve as a reminder that public office holders are expected to uphold high standards of conduct, contributing to the integrity and public trust placed in the corrections system. The situation offers an opportunity for the Fiji Corrections Service to reinforce its commitment to accountability and professionalism, which is essential for growth and public confidence in the institution’s mission.

In light of the challenges faced, there is hope that the ongoing emphasis on integrity and decorum will help foster a more respectful approach within Fiji’s public service, paving the way for positive change and better relations with the community. The focus on ethical conduct will be vital for the future effectiveness and reputation of the corrections service.
