The President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, has commended the achievements of the Junior Kulas and expressed his gratitude towards the coaches, management, and young athletes. Speaking to the team prior to their departure for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia, he recognized this milestone as Fiji’s first participation in such a prestigious event, describing it as an extraordinary accomplishment.
Fiji, traditionally known for its prowess in rugby, is gaining international recognition in soccer as well. President Katonivere noted the country has consistently excelled on the global stage, particularly in sports, and stated that the women’s soccer team is marking the beginning of an exciting new era in Fiji’s sporting legacy.
He acknowledged the obstacles the team has encountered, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. The President praised the coaching and management teams for their unwavering commitment to prepare the athletes mentally and physically for competition. He expressed immense appreciation for their dedication, saying, “What you have done is something else.”
Additionally, he recognized the sacrifices made by players and their families, highlighting the significant role of team manager Naziah Ali Krishna, who is married to Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna. Her involvement is seen as a reflection of the passion and commitment that drives the team.
President Katonivere reassured the Junior Kulas of the continuous support from the State House, Government, and the nation, stating, “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji.”
The Junior Kulas will compete in Pool B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament is a pivotal moment for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the nation, and it is expected to inspire future athletes while fostering national pride in support of the team on the world stage.
The team, coached by Angeline Chua, will begin their tournament against Brazil on August 31 at 6 PM, followed by matches against Canada on September 3 at 8 PM and France on September 6 at 5 PM.
