Former USA Rugby 7s player Jone Naqica, who hails from Fiji, has recently been celebrated for his induction into the US Rugby Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025. This recognition culminates a remarkable nine-year journey representing the USA in rugby. Naqica expressed immense joy at being honored alongside six other distinguished inductees, stating, “I feel ecstatic; it hasn’t sunk in yet. I know it’s a tremendous honour to be inducted.”

During his tenure with the USA Eagles from 2001 to 2010, Naqica left a significant mark as both a full-back in the 15s format and a pivotal player in the rugby sevens circuit. Making his debut against South Africa, he quickly showcased his talent by scoring two tries. He earned eight caps in the 15s team and remarkably made 97 appearances in the 7s format, where he served as captain from 2006 to 2010, accumulating 23 caps.

Reflecting on his experiences with the USA rugby community, Naqica shared that he felt an immediate sense of belonging, stating, “My fellow teammates at USA Rugby were very welcoming so I felt like I belonged there right away.” He also enjoyed a fruitful club rugby career with the Denver Barbarians, leading them to the USA 7s Championships. Notably, upon his retirement in 2014, he stood as USA Rugby’s all-time leading try scorer in 7s rugby, amassing an impressive 411 points.

This induction not only highlights Naqica’s individual accomplishments but also contributes to the rich tapestry of rugby represented by players with diverse backgrounds. The recognition serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, particularly young players from Fiji, embodying hope and resilience.

Naqica’s journey reinforces the importance of support and acknowledgment in sports. The community’s backing has been crucial to his success, serving as a foundation for future generations in rugby to follow their dreams. His story exemplifies how dedication, talent, and a welcoming community can lead to significant achievements, encouraging many to pursue their aspirations in the realm of sports.
