The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) investigating the legality of Barbara Malimali’s appointment as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has postponed the submission of its findings once again, extending the deadline to April 29, 2025. Janet Mason, Counsel assisting the commission, confirmed the delay, attributing it to the necessity for thorough preparation and the comprehensive nature of the report.

Mason had previously moved the deadline to today after an initial announcement for submission on April 11. She indicated that the report would be presented to both the President and the Prime Minister, who will then determine the next steps regarding publication and media discussion. “We will not know their instructions regarding publication and press interactions until they have had the opportunity to review and digest the report’s contents,” she explained.

Chaired by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, the inquiry focuses on whether Malimali’s appointment in September 2024 complied with legal standards and whether there were any external influences affecting it. It is examining evidence and testimonies from over 35 witnesses, including senior officials and political figures, to uphold the critical principles of transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governance.

Reflections from similar articles underscore the significance of this inquiry as an avenue for reinforcing governance integrity. As this investigation continues, it’s hoped that the findings will not only address concerns about individual appointments but also stimulate broader reforms aimed at enhancing ethical standards and public trust in the governmental process.

The ongoing commitment to ensuring fairness and integrity during this inquiry is a promising sign for potential improvements in governance and accountability, paving the way for a brighter future for Fiji’s political landscape. Such efforts are essential to nurturing public confidence in governmental processes and ensuring that appointments in public service are conducted with the utmost integrity and transparency.
