The condition of infrastructure in Fiji’s Western Division is set to be a major focus for Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu in an upcoming report to the Speaker of Parliament. Following a week-long consultation with key stakeholders in the region, Seruiratu plans to shed light on various challenges that the Western Division faces, particularly emphasizing the deteriorating infrastructure that affects many sectors.

Seruiratu noted that similar concerns regarding infrastructure have been raised in the Northern Division, establishing a pattern of complaint regarding road conditions. “We understand that we’re just coming out of the rainy season, but the state of the infrastructure is crucial, especially with the June 11 start of the cane harvesting season,” he stated, indicating the urgency for improvements in cane access roads and other vital transport routes.

His previous discussions in Parliament have highlighted the necessity of enhancing access routes from cane fields to public roads, which involves coordinated efforts from the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Public Works Department (PWD). Seruiratu intends to advocate for improvements not just for cane access but also for government services across various ministries. “There are issues in some ministries which should be addressed,” he remarked, particularly focusing on the role that the Ministry for Rural Development plays in improving rural services.

This focus aligns with previous discussions where Seruiratu emphasized the dire state of road conditions and infrastructure across Fiji. In prior engagements, he has criticized the government for their lack of effective road management, calling for transparency and accountability in dealing with infrastructure repairs. He underscored that inadequate infrastructure hampers access to essential services, further entrenching socio-economic disparities across rural areas.

The community discussions advocate for a collaborative approach between government officials and local populations to address these pressing concerns effectively. Addressing infrastructure shortcomings has the potential to not only improve the day-to-day lives of Fijians but also bolster economic growth in the region by enhancing access to markets and essential services.

In light of these ongoing discussions, there is a sense of hope that constructive dialogues may lead to actionable outcomes that prioritize the needs of residents in Fiji. By enhancing infrastructure standards, stakeholders can work toward creating a more equitable and prosperous future for all Fijians.
