Traditional leaders in Fiji have praised the introduction of the country’s inaugural National Rural Development Policy (NRDP), deeming it a significant milestone in tackling ongoing challenges faced by rural and maritime communities. During a consultation event for the Northern Division, Tui Macuata and former president Ratu Wiliame Katonivere emphasized that development should transcend mere infrastructure and services; it must uphold dignity, enhance self-reliance, and ensure equitable progress across all communities.

Ratu Wiliame recognized that earlier rural development frameworks, such as the Integrated Rural Development Framework of 2009, did not adequately address the persistent issues that plague many areas, including access to clean water, reliable transportation, and essential services. He expressed that a holistic approach is essential, one that respects both land and sea, bolsters social cohesion, and creates opportunities for the youth to flourish without necessitating their migration from their communities.

The NRDP is being hailed as a transformative initiative that promotes inclusivity and emphasizes collaboration through consultations involving traditional leaders, government officials, the private sector, and development partners. Ratu Wiliame noted that this policy could empower provinces and districts, enhance service delivery, and foster sustainable development grounded in local cultures.

The optimistic outlook associated with the NRDP suggests it can ignite meaningful change, enabling communities to thrive while honoring their unique needs and aspirations. Such comprehensive efforts may pave the way for future generations to enjoy enriched livelihoods without having to abandon their homes for opportunities elsewhere.
