Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has raised concerns about Fiji’s response to the growing issue of illegal immigration, suggesting that the government might have been “too passive” in its approach. During a parliamentary session, he addressed inquiries on how authorities plan to manage the increasing number of illegal immigrants, which has surged to over 8,000 in the country.

Rabuka emphasized the need for a more proactive stance in enforcement efforts. He proposed that police and investigators should engage with individuals in public spaces to verify their identity, essentially asking for identification from those who appear suspicious. He stressed the importance of ensuring that individuals, particularly young people, are in appropriate contexts—whether that means being in school or elsewhere.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the government’s intention to review immigration legislation to enhance the effectiveness of local authorities in handling the situation. He noted that while specific data is available regarding the demographics of these illegal immigrants, discussing it publicly could be sensitive and potentially embarrassing for the country. Notably, the number of illegal immigrants has doubled in just one year, rising from 4,709 reported in January 2023.

This situation presents an opportunity for Fiji to strengthen its immigration policies and resources. By adopting a more proactive approach, the government could not only address the current challenges but also create a more robust system that ensures compliance with immigration laws while protecting the rights of legal residents and visitors.

In summary, Fiji’s leadership is reconsidering its strategies to manage illegal immigration, aiming for a balanced and effective response that maintains the integrity of its borders while being sensitive to the needs and rights of individuals within the country.
