Fiji’s Immigration Crackdown: Deadline Looms for Foreign Nationals

The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji is expressing grave concerns regarding the growing number of foreign nationals living in the country without valid immigration permits. Officials are urging these individuals to regularize their immigration status by May 31, 2025, or they will face enforcement measures.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Immigration, Lesikimacuata Korovavala, emphasized that while Fiji is open to skilled professionals and workers essential for nation-building, adhering to immigration laws remains a priority. Employers are also reminded that hiring foreign nationals without appropriate work permits constitutes an offense under the Immigration Act of 2003, putting them at risk of penalties for non-compliance.

Korovavala pointed out that strict enforcement measures will be implemented following the outlined deadline, signifying the government’s commitment to both national security and economic development.

This article aligns closely with recent discussions on immigration challenges within Fiji, where Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua recently noted that illegal immigration numbers have escalated dangerously, increasing from approximately 4,709 to over 8,000 individuals in just one year. Moreover, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged concerns over the government’s passive enforcement strategies, suggesting the need for a more proactive approach to manage illegal immigration effectively.

To complement these enforcement measures, Fiji has been actively working on reforms within its immigration system, including revised policies and enhanced processing capabilities for work permits, ensuring that both foreign labor and security concerns are adequately addressed.
