The Ministry of Housing in Fiji, alongside New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ MFAT), has embarked on a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the socio-economic circumstances for low-income households by boosting access to affordable and quality housing. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, announced a significant investment from the New Zealand government, exceeding NZ$15 million (equivalent to FJ$20.30 million). Out of this total, NZ$1.75 million (about FJ$2.36 million) will be directed to the Ministry of Housing to support vital efforts, including technical assistance and strategic planning.

Over the next three years, this funding aims to strengthen institutional capabilities and establish a comprehensive national housing database. Minister Nalumisa emphasized that this investment would enable better resource allocation across both new and continuing projects.

Additionally, the Model Towns Charitable Trust has received an allocation of NZ$6.17 million (FJ$8.4 million), with NZ$3.6 million (FJ$4.87 million) specifically designated for the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) Programme. This initiative is particularly focused on enhancing sanitation management within six informal settlements in the greater Suva area.

The government will provide technical expertise to refine policies and planning within the Ministry’s regulatory framework. They will also finalize the national housing policy and extend financial assistance for the Ministry’s Strategic Plan covering 2025 to 2029.

The collaboration between NZ MFAT and the Ministry of Housing is rooted in trust and a shared commitment to establishing a strong institutional partnership aimed at enhancing capacity and effectiveness.

This initiative not only underscores international cooperation but also represents a hopeful advancement towards improved living conditions for many Fijians, fostering growth and stability in the region. It signals a dedication to addressing housing challenges, which is crucial for the development of a sustainable and equitable society.
