Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya has called on the public to stay alert regarding the implications of rapid technological growth and increased internet access in Fiji. Her comments followed a recent collaboration between Vodafone Fiji and Starlink, which is expected to significantly improve telecommunications across the nation, particularly benefitting rural and maritime populations.

Tabuya highlighted a concerning trend, noting that Fiji ranks fourth globally in searching for pornographic content, with adult sites among the top ten data traffic sources in the country. As the co-chair of the anti-pornography taskforce, she emphasized the need for telecommunication companies and community stakeholders to spearhead awareness initiatives. These sessions should concentrate on responsible internet utilization, the adverse effects of excessive screen time, and the associated risks of accessing pornography.

The Minister stressed the importance of equipping citizens with the necessary knowledge and tools to safely navigate the digital environment. She warned of the potential rise in technology-facilitated gender-based violence and child exploitation as digital infrastructure expands, urging communities to implement protective measures in tandem with these advancements.

Tabuya’s appeal underscores the need for collective responsibility in leveraging technology for social good, ensuring that enhanced connectivity does not undermine the welfare of families and communities. Her hopeful message encourages a proactive culture of awareness and responsibility, aiming to harness technology’s potential to foster a safer and more informed society.

In summary, Minister Lynda Tabuya advocates for awareness around responsible internet use amidst improved connectivity from a new telecom partnership. She urges proactive community engagement to mitigate potential risks, particularly regarding pornography and gender-based violence. Emphasizing cooperation, she envisions technology as a force for good in Fiji while promoting social responsibility.
