Landowners in Fiji feel sidelined in discussions about homelessness, as revealed by Suva City Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa during a recent meeting about the council’s Voluntary Local Review (VLR). Boseiwaqa argued that the common perception that land scarcity is to blame for the homelessness crisis is misleading. He stated that there is indeed land available but emphasized the lack of communication and collaboration between traditional landowning communities and governmental bodies.

Boseiwaqa’s call for stronger partnerships aims to enhance urban planning and housing solutions. He suggested that by broadening the scope of city planning beyond Suva’s urban boundaries and improving public transportation, access to housing can be significantly increased. “In some big cities, people travel long distances to get home. That’s where planning comes in,” he noted, highlighting the importance of decentralization to alleviate the housing shortage.

These remarks align with a growing recognition of the housing crisis in Fiji, which includes more than 10,000 individuals currently living in informal settlements within Suva. Government reports have indicated that a significant portion of the population resides in inadequate housing conditions, underscoring the urgent need for effective urban planning and development strategies.

Experts have pointed out that rising costs of construction, outdated planning laws, and the emergence of informal settlements make tackling the housing crisis increasingly complex. However, there is hope as various initiatives are underway to foster collaborative efforts between government agencies and the community. The commitment to creating pathways for accessible housing solutions reflects a dedication to improving living conditions for all Fijians.

Overall, the collective push by the local government, traditional landowners, and community organizations signals a positive outlook on addressing the housing issues at hand. With a clear commitment to enhancing dialogue and collaboration, there is potential to create sustainable living environments for residents and to alleviate the pressures of homelessness and inadequate housing in Fiji.
