ASPEN Medical is set to introduce a fully integrated electronic medical record (EMR) system within the next two years, which promises to revolutionize patient care throughout Fiji’s Western Division. This new system aims to unify surgical and obstetric modules, integrate laboratory and radiology services, and consolidate all patient data into a single platform. Currently, healthcare professionals struggle with fragmented systems, which slow down processes and complicate care delivery.
The innovative EMR was discussed by ASPEN General Manager Dr. Rigamoto Taito at the Fiji Medical Association Conference. She emphasized that the EMR will streamline operations, improve clinical supervision, and enhance decision-making capabilities for staff at Lautoka and Ba hospitals. Since ASPEN Medical, in collaboration with the Fiji National Provident Fund, assumed management of these hospitals, significant improvements in patient safety, care quality, and staff development have been noted.
A key component of this initiative is Health Care Fiji, a public-private partnership with the Fiji National Provident Fund holding the majority stake. This collaboration underscores a commitment to upgrading healthcare services to meet international standards and aligns with Fiji’s broader objective of attaining Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
Since taking over management, ASPEN Medical has fostered a culture of transparency and learning, encouraging staff to report incidents more frequently without fear of punitive action. This has led to enhancements in workforce training, including compulsory life support programs for all staff members, and a focus on nursing education both locally and internationally.
Improvements have also been seen in patient care metrics, with staff showing heightened compliance with hand hygiene practices and optimizing patient stay durations. Specialized medical services, including cardiothoracic surgery and radiotherapy, are being developed through partnerships with the government and private entities.
The introduction of a cardiac lab this year is aimed at expanding the local capacity for interventional cardiology, complementing outsourced services. Dr. Taito emphasizes that the pillars of sustained quality care include international accreditation, technological integration, and workforce safety.
Moreover, patient empowerment is increasingly being recognized as a crucial element of safety strategy. Patients are encouraged to participate proactively in infection control measures, such as reminding healthcare workers about hand hygiene protocols, which is a key requirement under JCI standards.
By advancing the EMR and continuing these initiatives, Health Care Fiji is positioning itself as a leader in delivering excellent healthcare services in the region. The developments mark a hopeful future for healthcare in Fiji, enhancing patient experiences and setting new benchmarks for medical excellence and safety.
