President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere has commended the achievements of the Junior Kulas and expressed his sincere gratitude to the coaches, management, and the young athletes themselves.
In a speech to the team before their departure for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia, the President highlighted the significance of this occasion, marking the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level. He described this achievement as a remarkable milestone for the nation.
Fiji, traditionally known for its rugby prowess, is now gaining international recognition in soccer, with the President noting that the country has consistently exceeded expectations in the sporting arena. He pointed out that the women’s soccer team’s accomplishments are opening a new and exciting chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
While acknowledging the team’s successes, President Katonivere also mentioned the hurdles they face, including challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and facilities. He praised the coaching and management staff for their hard work in ensuring the players were well-prepared both mentally and physically, expressing his admiration for their dedication.
The President recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, and emphasized the vital role of team manager Naziah Ali Krishna, who is married to Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna. He noted her involvement as a testament to the passion and commitment driving the team.
Assuring the team of continued support from the State House, the Government, and the nation, President Katonivere stated, “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji.”
The Junior Kulas are set to compete in Pool B against France, Canada, and Brazil, with their first match against Brazil scheduled for August 31 at 6 PM. This tournament marks a significant step forward for women’s football in Fiji and is expected to inspire future generations of athletes while uniting the country in support of its football team on a global stage. Angeline Chua’s coached team will also face Canada on September 3 at 8 PM and France on September 6 at 5 PM.
