The Fijian government is actively pursuing the establishment of a medicinal cannabis industry aimed at fostering economic growth and job creation, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica. He emphasized the lack of issues surrounding potential government investment, as interest continues to grow from international investors, particularly from Australia and Canada, in Fiji’s medicinal cannabis opportunities.
Kamikamica highlighted that a New Zealand-based firm, Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals (APP), is among the initial companies engaging with the Fijian government. However, APP has recently faced challenges, including going into liquidation due to substantial debts. Despite this setback, Kamikamica affirmed the government’s commitment to developing a regulatory framework that will ensure a sustainable medicinal cannabis industry in Fiji.
Recent reports indicate that the demand for medicinal cannabis products is surging globally, positioning Fiji to capitalize on this trend. The initiatives are supported by wide community backing, with a notable 75% of participants in consultations supporting the legalization of medicinal cannabis for medical use. This strong community endorsement is particularly prominent among male farmers aged 36 to 45, who see substantial opportunities within this new industry.
The government’s plans include stringent regulations and security measures to mitigate risks associated with potential theft and the illicit market, drawing on successful practices from nations like Australia. The anticipated legislation is expected to be introduced in 2025, representing a significant step towards solidifying Fiji’s place in the global medicinal cannabis arena.
The development of the medicinal cannabis industry is projected to boost export revenues, create jobs, and enhance expertise in medicinal research, benefiting the economy and improving the quality of life for many Fijians. This initiative showcases a commitment not only to economic diversification but also to community empowerment, especially in rural areas where agricultural development is essential.
As discussions continue, there is hope that Fiji can establish a competitive and well-regulated medicinal cannabis sector that could bring about positive economic transformation and support the health needs of its citizens.
