The Great Council of Chiefs is set to convene with the Office of the President next week to deliberate on a potential official engagement with King Charles III. This meeting is spearheaded by GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, who emphasizes its role in revitalizing the historical ties between the Great Council of Chiefs and the British Monarchy.
This upcoming discussion is a continuation of dialogues that began during President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s official visit to England last year, where preliminary conversations with King Charles took place. Ratu Viliame mentioned that the agenda will include the President’s Official Secretary and aims to define the objectives of any forthcoming visit to the King, as well as the topics that will be presented during the engagement.
Once the details are finalized, the Great Council of Chiefs intends to communicate formal plans with the Royal Household to confirm the engagement. Ratu Viliame remarked, “We have to first clarify what is needed and what topics will be discussed with the King. Once that is confirmed, we will be able to finalize the GCC’s official visit, which will include the Tui Macuata.”
The GCC views the restoration of formal ties with the British Monarchy as an opportunity to reinforce Fiji’s traditional heritage and historical connections with the Royal Family. This initiative reflects a hopeful outlook towards fostering deeper relationships and cultural exchange, illustrating the ongoing commitment to maintain important connections with the past while looking to the future.
