Within the next two weeks, Pacific Polytech in Fiji will see 424 skilled young graduates emerge into the workforce, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s vocational education landscape. Recently, 132 students in Labasa and 181 in Nausori celebrated their completion of national certificate level three programs across various critical trades, such as automotive engineering, plumbing, electrical mechanics, carpentry, and more. A further 111 graduates are set to receive their qualifications tomorrow in Tavua.
Peni Taoi, the director of Pacific Polytech, highlighted the importance of these accomplishments for Fiji’s future, stating that this surge of graduates is primed to contribute meaningfully to communities and the economy. Since its inception during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, the institution has grown into a key player in Fiji’s technical education, now operating 13 campuses and training centers, with over 3,100 students enrolled and a total of 3,400 graduates in recent years.
Taoi passionately conveyed that these graduates represent the transformative power of vocational education, viewing it as more than a fallback option—it’s a pathway to progress and inclusion. He remarked, “Every graduate is a powerful reminder that when opportunity meets determination, it can unlock futures that once seemed impossible.”
This message aligns with ongoing discussions among government officials and educational leaders who emphasize technical and vocational education training (TVET) as a strategic solution to address employment challenges and skills shortages in Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has been a vocal proponent of these initiatives, recognizing the role of institutions like Pacific Polytech in reshaping perceptions about vocational education and its potential for empowering individuals and driving national development.
