The Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is prepared to take action based on the upcoming recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report concerning the appointment of former FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that he has already instructed the CID to get ready for possible investigations once the report is handed over.
This readiness comes amid growing anticipation for the COI report, which is expected to shed light on the legality and procedural integrity surrounding Malimali’s appointment. Suspended earlier this week by the President, Malimali has been at the center of public and political scrutiny, as concerns emerged regarding the appointment process and her subsequent actions in office.
A high-level meeting involving Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who presented the report, and Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai took place to discuss the findings of the COI. The inquiry was prompted by significant public pressure regarding the circumstances of Malimali’s appointment as head of the anti-corruption body, FICAC.
The inquiry aims to ensure accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance structures. With similar investigations in the past calling for essential reforms within public institutions, there is hope that the findings will lead to renewed trust in the ability of the government to uphold ethical standards in its processes.
Such inquiries present a pivotal opportunity for systemic reforms, reinforcing the commitment to integrity and transparency in Fiji’s political landscape. While challenges remain, this ongoing investigation could pave the way for a more credible governance framework, potentially restoring faith in public officials and institutions.
