The Ministry of Employment in Fiji is making strides to modernize its occupational health and safety (OHS) practices, emphasizing a shift towards digitization. Atish Kumar, the acting permanent secretary, highlighted these efforts during the recent World Day for Safety and Health at Work event in Suva. The initiatives include a transition to a paperless system for inspections and reporting, as well as implementing cashless transactions and online services.

Kumar noted that these changes aim to foster a safer and more sophisticated workforce in Fiji. He referred to the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming workplaces by automating routine tasks and enhancing human skills such as creativity and problem-solving. He believes this technological transformation presents an opportunity to prioritize human potential and well-being, encouraging collaboration between employers and the government to ensure equitable benefits from AI advancements.

Similar initiatives have been echoed by Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh, who recently spoke about enhancing workplace safety through digital solutions and improved regulations with a focus on accountability. Singh has expressed the necessity of updating existing OHS practices to reflect the pressing demands posed by emerging technologies.

This modernization of OHS practices reflects a hopeful perspective for Fiji’s workforce, showcasing the government’s commitment to worker welfare and the potential for a more efficient and safer work environment as all stakeholders collaborate for improved safety outcomes. These ongoing transformations not only signify a proactive approach to workplace safety but also a profound dedication to creating a resilient, adaptable workforce equipped for future challenges.

The push for modernization and the integration of digital tools into the workforce highlights a significant opportunity for growth and improvement in working conditions across various sectors in Fiji, ultimately benefiting both workers and the broader economy.
