The Fijian government is embarking on a significant review of its import protocols to facilitate access to critical food products. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has confirmed that the government is collaborating with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to dismantle longstanding trade barriers that have limited the importation of essential goods.

Currently, Fiji restricts imports of whole frozen chicken exclusively to New Zealand, despite several countries producing safe and competitive poultry products. Additionally, ghee, which is a staple in many Fijian households, cannot be imported from India, a leading dairy producer. Prasad highlighted several food items that can only be sourced from a limited number of countries, stating that such restrictions have contributed to higher food costs and less consumer choice.

The review aims to introduce more competition into the supply chains, thereby reducing reliance on a select few suppliers. This initiative is positioned as part of a broader strategy to lower prices by addressing structural constraints that lead to high costs, alongside tackling taxes and duties.

Prasad emphasized the importance of ensuring that food safety is maintained while expanding the range of countries and suppliers Fiji can trade with. The overarching goal is to enhance affordability and variety for consumers and businesses, aligning with previous measures such as the Farm to Fork program, which promotes local sourcing and sustainability.

This positive development is expected to not only benefit consumers by lowering prices but also strengthen the local economy as more diverse suppliers become involved in the market. The commitment to improving import protocols symbolizes Fiji’s proactive approach to ensuring food security and nutritional diversity, paving the way for a healthier populace.

Given recent governmental initiatives aimed at empowering farmers and enhancing local production, there is an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s agricultural sector. With collaborative efforts and strategic changes, the nation is positioned to improve its food systems and overall economic resilience.
