Fiji is taking significant steps to enhance digital education within its schools by developing a comprehensive digital literacy curriculum, prompted by findings from a recent Digital and Financial Literacy survey that revealed moderate levels of digital and financial proficiency among adults in the nation. This initiative, led by the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan to better prepare students for the modern workforce.
The proposed curriculum will introduce digital literacy—referred to as DigLit—as a standalone subject across school years from Year 1 to Year 13. The objective of this curriculum is to equip students with vital skills, including digital safety, efficient research techniques, problem-solving skills, and appropriate online behavior. This initiative aims to bridge existing knowledge gaps in both digital and financial literacy.
Iowane Tiko, Director for Curriculum Advisory Services, represented Education Minister Aseri Radrodro in discussing the importance of the curriculum rollout, highlighting its potential to address deficiencies in current digital skills and preparing students for a dynamic job market. This initiative coincides with a growing emphasis on the need for digital proficiency, particularly heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, as noted by Nereo Peñalver Garcia, the European Union’s Deputy Head of Delegation. Garcia pointed out that fostering digital skills is essential for unlocking new opportunities and driving innovation, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s educational ventures.
This initiative is a critical opportunity to empower the youth of Fiji, equipping them with necessary competencies in an increasingly digital environment. It aims not only to boost individual capabilities but also to enhance the overall economy and societal welfare by developing a more digitally literate population.
