Thomas Setitaia is gearing up to represent the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team in the upcoming Oceania Rugby U20 Championship at Prince Charles Park in Nadi next week. The young flanker, originally from Tovu in Lau but now residing in New Zealand, expressed his excitement about making the final squad to represent Fiji.
Setitaia shared, “It’s good to make the final squad to represent Fiji; it’s pretty good.” He noted that being invited to join the national team was a goal he set at the beginning of the year, especially following his participation in a match against the Fiji U20 team in Taupo, New Zealand.
He has previously made a name for himself by representing the Moana Pasifika side in the Super Rugby Pacific U20 tournament. Reflecting on his accomplishments, Setitaia remarked, “It was actually pretty special to be selected. This is probably the highest achievement I’ve accomplished so far.” He is eager to step onto the field against teams from Tonga and Samoa, admitting that it will be a unique experience to compete against his former teammates from Moana Pasifika.
In preparation for the championship, Setitaia has been training intensively with his teammates, stating, “I’m focused on nailing my role as a flanker, and I know the boys I’ll be playing alongside would do their job.” This sense of confidence is bolstered by his assurance in the quality of the squad, emphasizing the hard work that has gone into selection.
The Fiji U20 team is filled with emerging talents like Setitaia, who exemplify the dedication and resilience of Fijian athletes. As they prepare for the championship, there is palpable excitement and hope for their performances on the international stage, representing not just themselves but their families and their country.
This narrative reinforces the idea that young athletes are crucial to the future of Fijian rugby, embodying the spirit of the sport and inspiring others to strive for greatness. The tournament ahead is not just a competition but also an opportunity for these athletes to showcase their skills and foster the growth of rugby in Fiji.
