Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has defended Fiji against criticisms suggesting the nation is heavily dependent on foreign aid. He articulated that Fiji’s international diplomatic and economic relationships are not only vital but also essential for sustainable long-term growth.

His comments were made in response to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s recent address marking the beginning of the parliamentary year, during which national priorities were highlighted. Rabuka rebuked the notion of Fiji being labeled a “beggar nation,” arguing that such misconceptions diminish the nation’s substantial contributions to global matters.

He emphasized that Fiji’s active role in international affairs, particularly in peacekeeping and climate initiatives, has solidified its reputation on the world stage. The Prime Minister clarified that Fiji’s engagement with development partners is a strategic alliance aimed at achieving economic stability, enhancing infrastructure, and building resilience to external challenges.

Rabuka reflected on Fiji’s historical tenacity, claiming that resilience has always characterized the Fijian spirit. As the nation seeks to rebound economically while facing the ongoing threats of climate change, he urged leaders to proactively shape policies fostering upliftment and development for all Fijians.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister called upon Parliament to serve as a platform for constructive governance, distancing it from political conflicts. He paid homage to the traditional leaders who ceded the islands to Britain in 1874 and acknowledged the sacrifices made by Fijian soldiers and peacekeepers in global security operations.

As the new parliamentary year commences, Rabuka encouraged Members of Parliament to uphold integrity and work diligently towards securing a prosperous future for Fiji. He concluded that the journey ahead requires a collective effort, drawing upon past wisdom and a strong commitment to the nation’s future.

This narrative not only positions Fiji in a positive light but also reflects a broader hopeful perspective on a future defined by resilience and cooperation at both the domestic and international levels.
