In a recent conversation with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on “A Conversation with the Prime Minister,” Deputy Chief of Staff Cheerieann Wilson explored various pressing national issues. The discussion covered topics such as the Prime Minister’s return to Fiji, infrastructure development, political stability, and key policy decisions informed by community feedback from the Your Fiji, Your Voice column in The Fiji Times.

Upon landing in Fiji after nearly three weeks abroad, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the comforting aspect of home-cooked meals provided by the Fiji Airways cabin crew, contrasting it with the food experiences he had in the USA and Germany. He quickly engaged with local officials to discuss the recent flooding and weather damages affecting the Nadi area, underscoring a proactive approach to governance.

The Prime Minister reassured concerns regarding the government’s stability amid recent political maneuvers, emphasizing that changes in ministerial roles do not affect the overarching stability and purpose of the government, which continues to focus on progress and harmony.

Addressing ongoing discussions about increasing female participation in politics, Rabuka noted that all candidates for the 2022 Elections underwent a rigorous selection process. He also responded to inquiries about the pace of constitutional reforms and health sector improvements, indicating that discussions are moving forward, including efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and recruit skilled professionals to mitigate shortages.

In light of environmental issues, the Prime Minister acknowledged Fiji’s vulnerability to climate change, stating that while the nation is making strides, joint regional efforts are crucial for addressing broader challenges.

Concerns were raised about the sugarcane industry, with the Prime Minister agreeing that revitalizing this sector is complex. He highlighted the diminishing number of active sugarcane farmers and discussed innovative strategies to attract them back.

Prime Minister Rabuka’s reflections on various societal topics demonstrate a commitment to addressing public concerns holistically, fostering a dialogue for constructive change, and inspiring hope for a stable and prosperous Fiji.

In support of this narrative, it is vital for the government to remain transparent and accountable, allowing voices from the community to shape governance. As the Prime Minister put it, listening to the needs of the people will only drive Fiji toward a brighter future.
