Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu emphasized the importance of environmental preservation for future generations during the recent International Mother Earth Day celebration in Suva. He urged all Fijians to take responsibility for ensuring that the children inherit a thriving and resilient Fiji.

Mr. Bulitavu highlighted the proactive measures already being taken in local communities, such as the efforts in Vesi, where children have planted fruit and timber seedlings, transforming degraded land into flourishing food forests. He stressed that these initiatives not only help restore ecosystems but also foster a sense of stewardship among the youth.

“The younger generation is key to our environmental legacy,” he stated, advocating for the integration of environmental education into school curriculums to empower students in making informed choices. Bulitavu mentioned that the Ministry of Environment is committed to enhancing wildlife and environmental education resources, equipping today’s youth with the tools necessary to face ecological challenges.

Encouraging ongoing participation in reforestation initiatives, Mr. Bulitavu remarked, “Every seed planted is a promise — a promise of shade, of cleaner air, and of resilience for generations to come.”

This call to action resonates with broader efforts in Fiji, reflecting the country’s ambitious goal to plant 30 million trees over the next 15 years. These initiatives are crucial for combating climate change, restoring ecosystems, and engaging communities in sustainability practices. Successful community-led programs previously reported illustrate the vital role of collective action in securing a greener future.

Overall, the momentum created by events like International Mother Earth Day serves as a hopeful reminder of the impact of community involvement in environmental stewardship, demonstrating that through collective action, a vibrant and sustainable future is within reach for Fiji.
