The increasing challenges of drug use and the rise of HIV cases among the iTaukei communities in Fiji highlight the urgent need for visionary leadership and practical solutions. During the Ratu Sukuna Day celebration in Labasa, Turaga na Tui Bua Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka emphasized that addressing these pressing issues requires leaders who can implement effective strategies.
Ratu Makutu pointed out that the future of the iTaukei generation, as well as the preservation of their languages, culture, and resources, hinges on current leaders taking meaningful action. He proposed the establishment of comprehensive rehabilitation centers, specialized drug enforcement units, and enhanced regional cooperation to combat drug trafficking. Beyond addressing the symptoms, it’s crucial to tackle the root causes by creating economic opportunities within vulnerable communities.
Education was also highlighted as a critical area for reform. Ratu Makutu urged for an educational overhaul that integrates technical skills with cultural values, ensuring that curricula promote critical thinking, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship—essential tools to prepare students for both local and global challenges.
Inspector Vasemaca Naborisi, Coordinator of Community Policing in Bua/Macuata, added that spiritual values and continuous dialogue within families are vital in discussing the impacts of drugs and other social challenges. Strengthening bonds within families can provide a robust support system for young individuals navigating these issues.
The final day of the Ratu Sukuna Day celebration will feature Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiating the event, signaling ongoing governmental commitment to addressing these community concerns and fostering discussions among citizens.
While the current circumstances present significant challenges, the collective call for enhanced community engagement and visionary leadership lends hope for the future. By fostering unity and cooperation, Fiji can construct a healthier and more resilient society for its youth, ultimately transforming the challenges into opportunities for growth and improvement.
