Fiji’s Future at Risk: How the Youth Can Lead the Charge Against Climate Disasters

Fiji’s Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, recognizes that the nation faces ongoing challenges from climate-induced disasters, particularly impacting rural and maritime communities that are highly vulnerable to cyclones, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. Addressing these issues, Ditoka emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing resilience in at-risk areas.

During a recent statement, he asserted, “Community resilience starts with empowerment,” indicating that the Ministry is intensifying efforts to bolster community-based disaster risk reduction initiatives. One of the key strategies highlighted is the strengthening of the Integrated Rural Development Framework, aimed at ensuring that all development projects are sustainable and aware of potential risks.

In light of the upcoming cyclone season, which lasts from November to April, Ditoka’s focus aligns with previous discussions emphasizing the critical importance of household preparedness. The Fiji Meteorological Service has forecasted that one to two tropical cyclones may pass through Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone during this period, with a possibility of one cyclone reaching severe levels.

Further reinforcing the importance of preparedness, Ditoka pointed to the significant risks that climate change poses to the younger population, which suffers both immediate dangers and long-term consequences related to education, nutrition, and healthcare during natural disasters. He advocates for integrating the perspectives and needs of youth into disaster risk strategies, referencing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which promotes empowering young individuals to play active roles in shaping these strategies.
