Richard Walker has been named the new Head Coach of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, succeeding Saiasi Fuli, whose contract ended in December. Bringing over 15 years of coaching experience to the role, Walker previously directed both the USA and Japan Women’s 7s teams and is recognized for establishing high-performance standards in rugby.

His distinguished coaching background includes leading the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship and guiding the USA Women’s 7s team during the Rio Olympic Games and the 7s World Cup in San Francisco, where they surpassed expectations. Walker’s international experience positions him as a pivotal figure in enhancing Fiji’s performance on the world stage.

The Fiji Rugby Union has expressed its gratitude to interim Head Coach Timoci Volavola for his contributions and anticipates a collaborative effort between Volavola and Walker as they gear up for upcoming international tournaments, including the HSBC SVNS Series and Olympic qualification.

Walker’s appointment arrives at a promising juncture for women’s rugby in Fiji, signifying a fresh strategic direction. There is widespread optimism within the Fijian rugby community, as Walker’s expertise and vision are poised to substantially benefit the Fijiana 7s team, with aspirations for future success that could elevate Fiji’s prominence in women’s rugby.

Combining Walker’s leadership with the strong collaboration among the team could lay the groundwork for growth and triumph in the upcoming seasons. This new chapter is not only a testament to the potential of women’s rugby in Fiji but also a hopeful indication of the bright future that lies ahead for the team’s development and competitiveness on the global stage.
