According to UN Resident Coordinator Dirk Wagner, the nation lacks essential technical expertise and resources to tackle the HIV epidemic effectively. Wagner emphasized that addressing the outbreak requires a comprehensive strategy, incorporating not just prevention but also accessible treatment and ongoing care for affected communities.
The United Nations has pledged its support, partnering with the Fijian government to provide technical assistance and enhance healthcare options. Wagner expressed confidence in the government’s ongoing efforts to manage the HIV crisis, indicating a collaborative commitment to ensure that preventative measures and community advocacy programs are effective.
Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the challenges in utilizing both expertise and funding to formulate impactful policies. He pointed out that despite these challenges, the ministry is actively working to strengthen its national response to HIV, aiming to improve health outcomes across the country.
Previously, concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of HIV have been raised by health officials. With reports of 552 new cases in the first half of the year, as noted by UNAIDS Pacific advisor Renata Ram, the urgency for intervention has amplified. Initiatives like the HIV Surge Strategy 2024-2027 aim to expand testing, provide treatment, and increase community engagement in health initiatives, especially targeting youth who are disproportionately affected.
