The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has strongly condemned acts of sacrilege against places of worship, affirming that such behavior is a violation of the right to freedom of religion and represents an attack on human dignity. The statement from Director Loukinikini Lewaravu follows an alarming incident where an individual vandalized the Shiv Mandir Temple in Samabula, causing severe damage to sacred deities, some of which are nearly a century old.

Lewaravu emphasized that this act not only breaches Section 305 of the Crimes Act 2009, which could result in a 14-year prison sentence, but it also directly contravenes religious freedoms protected under both the Fijian Constitution and major international human rights treaties. The commission stresses that places of worship are vital community spaces that deserve protection and respect, as they reflect the core values of dignity and tolerance engrained in Fijian society.

The incident aligns with previous acts of vandalism at religious sites, including a recent attack on the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir, underscoring a worrying trend of sacrilege in Fiji. In response, community leaders—including religious organizations and government officials—are calling for stronger protective measures and interfaith dialogue to promote mutual respect among diverse faiths.

A swift police response led to the suspect’s arrest, highlighting the community’s commitment to addressing such grievances. As leaders continue to advocate for unity and understanding, there remains a hopeful perspective that these incidents can strengthen the call for dialogue and reinforce the shared values that unite the country’s multi-religious landscape.

Through collective action, there is an aspiration for a future where places of worship are safeguarded, and communities can thrive in mutual respect and harmony, celebrating Fiji’s rich cultural and religious diversity.
