Mohammed Shafraaz Ali, a former senior engineer at the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for bribery by the Magistrates Court in Suva. Ali accepted a bribe in the form of a round-trip air ticket to Sydney, Australia, valued at $1,430.60, from Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited. This corrupt arrangement took place between March 1 and June 30, 2017, while he was serving as the Regional Engineer Bulk at WAF.
During his time at WAF, Ali had requested supplies for water systems, including repair clamps and valves, which were purchased through Sphynx Solutions as a direct result of his actions as a public servant. In addition to his prison sentence, Ali has been imposed a $3,000 fine, which is due by June 20, 2025. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 300 days added to his prison term.
Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou mandated a non-parole period of 12 months and has given Ali 28 days to appeal his conviction or sentence. This ruling highlights Fiji’s ongoing battle against corruption within public service, highlighting the critical need for ethical standards and accountability among officials.
The court’s decision sends a strong message against corrupt practices and signifies a commitment to enhancing integrity within Fiji’s governance. By promoting transparency and accountability in public service, the legal system bolsters public trust and reinforces the country’s efforts to combat corruption.
Overall, this case exemplifies a positive step toward upholding justice and ethical conduct within government operations, which could significantly contribute to Fiji’s ongoing fight against corruption.
