The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) received a total of thirty-four complaints during the reporting period from March 1 to March 30, 2025. Out of these complaints, twenty-one were identified as non-corruption related and were referred to the appropriate authorities for further action. Thirteen complaints have been recommended for either preliminary or full investigations.
In contrast, during the same period in 2024, FICAC received ninety-one complaints, with fifty-one classified as corruption-related and investigated further, while forty were deemed non-corruption matters. This shift highlights a notable decrease in complaints over the year.
FICAC did not initiate any legal proceedings in March 2025, but seven cases were disposed of by the Courts within the same timeframe. Despite a lower volume of complaints this year, FICAC’s commitment to anti-corruption remains strong. The Commission actively engages in preventative measures, emphasizing awareness and education to cultivate a culture of integrity throughout society.
The decrease in complaints could reflect improvements in governance and a trust in preventive measures, indicating that citizens may feel more secure in reporting potential issues without fear of repercussions. FICAC’s continued focus on education and awareness campaigns may also foster a more proactive community response towards accountability.
This pattern suggests a hopeful trend where the public is becoming more discerning regarding corruption and willing to engage with oversight bodies, which is a positive sign for future governance in Fiji.
