As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fulfilling its legislative responsibilities. Malimali emphasized the importance of protecting Fijians from corruption through thorough investigations, prosecutions, and, notably, public education on the issue.
She highlighted that corruption poses a significant threat to democratic institutions and erodes trust in governance, likening it to a parasite that damages societal systems. FICAC’s efforts are crucial in promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability, which align closely with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Malimali urged Fijians and stakeholders to take an active role in the fight against corruption by reporting any related activities to FICAC.
This year’s theme for International Anti-Corruption Day is “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” underscoring the collective effort needed to combat corruption.
