As Fiji commemorates International Anti-Corruption Day, Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to its mandate. She emphasized that FICAC’s crucial role encompasses protecting citizens from corruption through thorough investigations, prosecutions, and, most importantly, public education.

Malimali highlighted the detrimental effects of corruption on democratic institutions, explaining that it reduces public trust in governance and acts as a destructive force within societal systems. The Commissioner underlined FICAC’s mission to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability, which aligns with the broader Sustainable Development Goals.

In her address, Malimali appealed to the public and stakeholders to collaborate with FICAC, urging them to report any activities related to corruption. She emphasized the importance of collective action in the fight against corruption.

The theme for this year’s International Anti-Corruption Day is, “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” reflecting the need for communal engagement in the anti-corruption movement.

This initiative marks a significant step toward fostering a culture of integrity and accountability in Fiji, promising a brighter and more transparent future for all citizens. By actively participating, individuals and communities can help fortify democratic values and create a lasting impact against corruption.
