The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced that its special taskforce is actively addressing a significant backlog of cases while continuing its ongoing investigations. Acting Commissioner Lavi Rokoika revealed that the taskforce was originally established for specific investigations, but it has since evolved to focus on reviewing and resolving older cases that have piled up over the years.

Rokoika highlighted the considerable volume of cases currently managed by FICAC, some of which date back to the organization’s inception. Notably, in the central and eastern divisions, investigative teams have successfully closed 168 cases and referred seven matters to the police, including long-standing files from 2007.

“This effort to tackle the backlog is crucial in enhancing the Commission’s efficiency,” Rokoika emphasized. He noted that while the organization continues to pursue high-profile and complex cases, addressing older matters is equally vital. This approach aims to bolster timeliness, accountability, and public confidence in FICAC’s operations, ensuring they function independently and adhere to the law.

By taking these steps, FICAC is making substantial progress in maintaining transparency and trust within the community it serves.
