The operations of Ferris wheels across Fiji have been temporarily halted, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations. This ban comes in the wake of an investigation into an accident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel during the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni.

The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is currently conducting a thorough examination of circumstances surrounding the incident. Previous inspections of the amusement rides occurred on December 7 and 9, 2024, and the Ferris wheel received an operation certificate on December 9, 2024, after passing necessary tests to ensure safety.

The Ministry has assured the public that the investigation will be comprehensive, taking all available evidence into account. In the meantime, the NOHSS has put a hold on all rides until an official report can be produced, detailing findings from the investigation. Following extensive discussions, the Minister has deemed it necessary to impose a ban on all Ferris wheel operations until further notice.

This decision highlights the Ministry’s commitment to public safety and the importance of thorough investigations to prevent future incidents. As the NOHSS moves forward with its inquiry, there is hope that stringent safety measures will be implemented to enhance the security of amusement rides in Fiji going forward.

In summary, while the ban on Ferris wheels may disrupt entertainment options temporarily, it reflects a proactive approach toward ensuring safety and preventing accidents in the future. This dedication to safety could lead to greater public confidence in amusement facilities once operations resume.
