The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a cautionary forecast predicting heavy rainfall between 250mm to 400mm in the sugarcane-growing regions of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu for the upcoming months. This prediction comes on the heels of a significantly dry spell, with these areas having recorded less than 100mm of rainfall during October and November 2024.

To address the anticipated challenges due to this excessive rainfall, agricultural officials are proactive in equipping farmers with essential guidelines aimed at minimizing potential negative impacts, such as waterlogging, increased weed proliferation, and elevated pest threats.

Farmers are advised to enhance their land preparations by ensuring that drainage systems are capable of handling the predicted downpours. Suggested practices include integrated weed management techniques, such as manual weeding and responsible herbicide usage. Conducting soil fertility tests and applying amendments, like lime, is also recommended to sustain soil health. Moreover, the importance of sourcing high-quality, disease-free seed cane from certified nurseries is emphasized to help reduce the risk of plant disease.

Importantly, this forecast aligns with Fiji’s tropical cyclone season, heightening the chances of low-pressure systems that could intensify rainfall further. While the predicted conditions pose potential challenges related to flooding and waterlogging, they also offer a significant opportunity for agricultural recovery and growth. The expected rainfall is crucial for replenishing water resources, which could ultimately enhance crop yields and support Fiji’s agricultural sector.

Farmers are encouraged to maintain communication with the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji for ongoing assistance, and the government reiterates the importance of remaining vigilant for weather updates. By combining thorough preparation with a mindset of cautious optimism, Fiji’s farming community can effectively confront these challenges, setting the stage for a prosperous growing season ahead.
