Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged that while spot checks for monitoring vehicle emissions in Fiji are currently not being conducted, the option to reintroduce them remains on the table. Speaking as the Environment Minister, Mr. Rabuka addressed inquiries regarding the status of Fiji’s National Carbon Strategy Roadmap, especially in light of concerns raised by Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma about rising vehicle emissions, including carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

Mr. Sharma expressed worries about unserviced vehicles contributing to air pollution, prompting questions about the measures the government is taking to mitigate the carbon footprint. In response, Mr. Rabuka pointed out that regulations are in place, including emission checks conducted during vehicle license renewals, which help manage emissions proactively.

He also highlighted the Coalition Government’s progress in developing the National Carbon Strategy Roadmap, first launched at COP29. This roadmap outlines Fiji’s unique circumstances and objectives in addressing climate change and aims to create a regulatory framework that facilitates collaboration between stakeholders for emissions reduction. Mr. Rabuka emphasized the importance of keeping global temperature increases below 1.5 degrees Celsius, stating that this is vital for Fiji’s future, especially as a Small Island Developing State facing the threats of rising sea levels and natural disasters exacerbated by climate change.

The government’s commitment to exploring investment opportunities to meet emissions reduction targets while simultaneously bolstering the local economy reflects an optimistic approach to environmental challenges.

In summary, the Fiji government recognizes the importance of tackling vehicle emissions and has established mechanisms to ensure compliance while remaining open to enhancing enforcement measures as necessary. As they work towards sustainability goals, there is hope that Fiji will strengthen its climate resilience and foster economic growth through innovative solutions.
