A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu to aid in relief efforts tomorrow. During a farewell event hosted by Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the members were commended for their willingness to support their Pacific neighbors in need.

Dr. Tudravu emphasized the significance of the team’s mission, stating, “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well.” He acknowledged the difficulty of leaving family behind to fulfill this important role and expressed gratitude for their dedication and sacrifice.

FEMAT holds the distinction of being the Pacific Islands’ first World Health Organization-verified international Emergency Medical Team, equipped to respond to emergencies and disasters both in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region. The team is self-sufficient and supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as well as the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ensuring they can mobilize effectively in times of crisis.

This team previously provided crucial assistance to Vanuatu following the devastating impacts of Tropical Cyclone Kevin and Tropical Cyclone Judy in March 2023, highlighting their ongoing commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region.

With this deployment, FEMAT continues its vital role in disaster response, showcasing regional solidarity and the importance of support across Pacific nations. Their readiness to assist once again embodies the spirit of collaboration and compassion that strengthens communities in times of need.

In summary, the upcoming deployment of FEMAT to Vanuatu represents a significant step in ongoing relief efforts, reinforcing the commitment of Fiji to aid its neighbors during crises and emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in humanitarian responses.
