The newly upgraded Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki has been officially reopened by Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau. This significant development showcases the Fijian Government’s ongoing dedication to enhancing crucial transport infrastructure across the nation.
Ellington Wharf plays a vital role as a maritime connection between Viti Levu and Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu, enabling passenger transport, reuniting families, and facilitating the efficient movement of goods between Fiji’s two largest islands. Minister Tuisawau emphasized that the reopening not only serves a practical function but also aligns with the government’s vision of creating reliable, safe, and efficient transportation links throughout Fiji.
“This wharf is a critical artery of economic activity that supports local businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs by providing better access to markets and reducing travel time,” he stated. The minister highlighted that the improvements to the wharf are anticipated to enhance safety while offering more reliable service for both passengers and freight transportation.
Tuisawau noted that these upgrades are expected to significantly boost economic activity in Rakiraki and its surrounding areas, furthering national objectives of regional integration and economic diversification. He urged community members and stakeholders to collaborate in order to fully leverage the benefits of this facility and ensure its sustainability over time.
Enhancements made during the upgrade included the sealing of 366 meters of previously unsealed roadway leading to the wharf, as well as modifications to the jetty area and the installation of five new streetlights, which will enhance safety and accessibility for all users. This revamp of Ellington Wharf not only represents a step forward for local infrastructure but also fosters optimism for economic growth and improved connectivity throughout Fiji.
