Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently addressed the Commission of Inquiry regarding the ongoing tensions involving Barbara Malimali, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Fiji, and Ana Mataiciwa, the current Supervisor of Elections. During his testimony, Rabuka acknowledged that the Constitutional Officers Commission was aware of these longstanding tensions, particularly in light of a letter from the Electoral Commission of Fiji that raised objections to Mataiciwa’s appointment.

The letter, which was signed by Malimali, criticized the process undertaken by the Selection Panel of the Constitutional Offices Commission and proposed alternative appointment models that included a rotation of candidates for the position of Supervisor of Elections. However, Rabuka noted that while the letter was discussed extensively within the Commission, no formal response was ever issued. He expressed disappointment upon learning that the other Commissioners had not endorsed the proposals contained in Malimali’s communication, which later leaked to the media, leading to allegations of attempted interference in the appointment process.

This situation unfolds against a backdrop of accusations where Mataiciwa has recently filed a police report against Malimali, alleging abuse of office and intimidation related to ongoing investigations. These serious claims tie into an inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) concerning Malimali’s conduct during her tenure as chairperson. The complexities of the case highlight the challenges facing Fiji’s electoral integrity and governance.

As investigations continue, there is a collective hope that these proceedings will lead to a clearer understanding of the facts and accountability among public officials. This can foster greater public confidence in the electoral process and ensure that integrity within Fiji’s governance structures is upheld. There’s potential for systemic reforms following the conclusions of these inquiries, emphasizing the need for transparency and adherence to democratic principles within electoral institutions.
