The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is currently implementing significant digital upgrades aimed at modernizing its internal operations, as outlined in recent discussions during its submission to the Public Accounts Committee regarding the 2021-2022 Audit Report. Sanjeshwar Ram, the Director of Corporate Services, emphasized that the FEO is prioritizing data integrity in preparation for future electoral events.

Inquiries were raised by Committee Chair Esrom Immanuel regarding the status of the Elections Management System, initially acquired in 2019 for $1.3 million. He questioned whether the system is still functioning or has become obsolete. Ram assured the committee that efforts are ongoing to upgrade the existing system.

In addition to the software enhancements, Ram highlighted that the FEO is reinforcing internal governance through digital processes and implementing business continuity planning. This modern approach is aimed at boosting transparency and operational efficiency, enabling the office to respond better to the demands of upcoming elections.

This development mirrors previous efforts by the FEO, including a recent overhaul of its server infrastructure. The transition to a hyper-converged infrastructure has proven essential in addressing past performance issues, securing election management, and enhancing disaster recovery capabilities. Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa previously noted how these upgrades are pivotal in ensuring reliability for citizens as Fiji approaches its future elections.

As the FEO commits to these advancements, it reflects a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s democracy. Such proactive measures to revamp technology and streamline operations serve to foster public confidence in the electoral framework and promote transparency, showing the FEO’s determination to deliver a trustworthy electoral process that can withstand the challenges ahead.
