Fiji’s Election Glitch: Two Years Later, Still Seeking Answers

The Coalition Government of Fiji has yet to fulfill its commitment to investigate the significant ‘glitch’ that occurred during the 2022 General Election, leaving citizens without clarity even two years later. Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has expressed concerns about the lack of clear directives from Justice Minister Siromi Turaga regarding the steps needed to address the issue ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections.

The glitch, which affected the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app on December 14, 2022, led to confusion when provisional vote results were suspended. This malfunction was attributed to failures in data transmission, resulting in incorrect vote counts being reported for various candidates. At that time, Sitiveni Rabuka, the former leader of the People’s Alliance, voiced his distrust in the election results following the incident.

Since taking office, Mataiciwa has stressed the critical need for a comprehensive report on this incident. She stated, “Two years have passed since the elections, and many stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and voters, want updates on this matter.” The Supervisor of Elections has also raised concerns regarding the proper storage of ballot boxes as preparations for the 2026 elections begin.

Minister Turaga has acknowledged the need for ongoing discussions about the investigation. Speaking at a recent cybercrime forum, he mentioned that the report is still under review and that discussions with the Electoral Commission continue. The importance of thorough investigations and electoral transparency was emphasized, with the hope that this ongoing inquiry would ultimately bolster public trust in the electoral process.

It remains essential for the government to provide clarity on this matter to all stakeholders involved. While the current delays may be frustrating, they also present an opportunity for officials to enhance the integrity and reliability of future elections in Fiji. There is a positive outlook that the steps being taken will lead to meaningful resolutions, ensuring a stronger democratic framework for the country moving forward.

In summary, although the investigation into the 2022 election glitch remains ongoing, the commitment to transparency and accountability expressed by government officials offers hope for improved electoral processes in the future.
