Gold Dreams: A Triumph at the Coca-Cola Games

It was a poignant morning for the parents of Merekeleni Ratubaka, who triumphed in the 3,000m open girls event, earning her school, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School, its 11th gold at the 2025 Coca-Cola Games National Championship. This victory marked Ratubaka’s second gold in the championship, having previously won gold in the sub-junior girls 1,500m final.

Emotions ran high as her mother, Nanise Tuwai, reflected on the sacrifices their family made to support their daughter’s journey, which included her relocation to Suva for studies and training. Tuwai expressed her deep gratitude, stating, “I told her all this is through God… Only God knows all the struggles I have been through and seeing my daughter shine today, words just cannot explain how I feel right now.” Her father, Temesi Waqa, also acknowledged the vital contributions of her coach, Antonio Raboiliku, for his commitment to preparing and supporting the athletes.

The family’s pride extended as they anticipated the upcoming performances of Ratubaka’s older brother, Semi Vunisa, who is set to compete in the senior boys 800m final.

The Coca-Cola Games are currently ongoing at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, showcasing not only exceptional athletic talent but also the profound support from families and communities rallying around their young athletes. The event transcends mere competition; it fosters a spirit of unity and celebration of achievements within school sports across Fiji.

As these championships unfold, they reflect the hopeful aspirations of Fiji’s youth in athletics, promising a bright future for sports in the region. The encouragement and stories of dedication serve as a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within young athletes when supported by their families and communities.
