Fiji’s Fisheries Future: Will Price Regulation Change the Game?

The Ministry of Fisheries has stated that it does not currently possess the authority to regulate or oversee fish prices in Fiji. During a session with the Standing Committee on Natural Resources regarding the Ministry’s 2021–2023 Annual Report, Permanent Secretary Sanjana Lal highlighted that fishermen and middlemen set market prices independently.

However, the Ministry’s Planning and Economic team, represented by Freddy Ledua, is actively exploring ways to incorporate price monitoring mechanisms into existing legislation. Their discussions indicate a forward-thinking approach towards potential changes that could address pricing concerns in the fish market. Ledua mentioned that while there is no imminent plan to regulate price per bundle, the Ministry is examining the possibility of regulations based on weight (kg), which may better reflect the market dynamics.

This initiative reflects a broader legislative review that aims to tackle persistent challenges faced by the fisheries sector, which has acknowledged the necessity for updates to better serve both producers and consumers.

In light of recent discussions on market practices, including comments from Minister for Trade and SMEs, Manoa Kamikamica, regarding excessive profit margins and consumer protection, it is evident that the government is committed to creating a more equitable market environment. Kamikamica emphasized the importance of stricter regulations and research efforts by the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission to evaluate pricing strategies in the broader market context.

This collaborative approach among various ministries signals a hopeful movement towards improved fairness and transparency in Fiji’s fish markets and beyond. By actively seeking to engage in legislative enhancements, the government is taking steps toward addressing market issues that affect both fishers and consumers, fostering a more balanced and sustainable fisheries sector.
