In an optimistic development for education in Fiji, over 80 schools in the Suva-Nausori area are set to receive significant upgrades, including the construction of a new secondary school. This announcement follows the publication of the Infrastructure Assessment Report during an event at Suva Primary School, which was highlighted by the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald. The report provides a detailed engineering evaluation of 86 schools in the region and acts as a vital tool for determining future support priorities for educational facilities.
The assessment reveals critical issues such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities, and the necessity for cyclone-resistant buildings. Alarmingly, more than half of the schools inspected were found to exceed optimal capacity. Furthermore, the report pointed out the plight of students at Davuilevu Secondary School, where some have been learning in tents since 2016, underscoring the immediate need for improved infrastructure.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recognized the Australian Government’s partnership, noting that this initiative is in line with the government’s education infrastructure master plan. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that all children in Fiji have access to a safe, resilient, and inclusive learning environment, which is a critical aspect of the National Development Plan.
An earlier report had similarly pointed out the infrastructure deficiencies within schools, emphasizing widespread issues related to sanitation and structural integrity. The acknowledgment of these challenges has initiated crucial discussions regarding funding and strategic plans aimed at transforming the educational landscape in Fiji.
With these collaborative efforts underway, there is an increasing sense of hope for substantial improvements in the educational sector. Stakeholders are committed to ensuring that every child in the Suva-Nausori region has the opportunity to learn in safe and supportive facilities. The initiatives being implemented today are not just addressing immediate concerns but are setting the stage for a brighter and more equitable educational future for all students in Fiji.
