The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation has proposed that Year 12 and 13 students be required to participate in a mandatory two-week work attachment. This initiative aims to better prepare students for the realities of the job market, as Federation board member Arvind Maharaj pointed out the current gap in workplace readiness among graduates. He made this suggestion during a session at the 2025 Education Forum in Suva, emphasizing that students often lack a clear understanding of workplace expectations when they leave school.

In addition, the Federation has called for the revival of Form Four certification, which Maharaj believes could address another gap between Class Eight and Form Six, potentially reducing dropout rates and engaging students more effectively. He advocates for earlier assessments to identify students who are falling behind, thereby ensuring support is provided before they exit the education system.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has expressed a similar perspective, acknowledging the need to align the curriculum with modern job market demands. Radrodro highlighted that a review of the outdated Education Act is crucial for shifting the focus away from exam-centric education towards practical real-world readiness. This aligns with ongoing discussions regarding systemic reforms needed in Fiji’s educational framework.

These initiatives reflect a growing recognition of the importance of equipping students with relevant skills. This approach echoes previous concerns shared by educational leaders, such as Dr. Eci Naisele from the Fiji Higher Education Commission, who has noted that many graduates face challenges due to a misalignment of academic training with labor market requirements.

Optimistically, the proposed reforms—including career awareness programs and vocational training—signal a commitment to developing a skilled workforce that addresses both educational and economic needs in Fiji. With such collaborative efforts underway, there is hope that Fiji’s education system will evolve to better prepare its youth for successful futures.
