The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has raised significant concerns over a worsening teacher shortage impacting both primary and secondary schools. General Secretary Muniappa Goundar has urged the Ministry of Education to promptly address these issues, particularly advocating for better support of injured teachers and improved working conditions.

During a recent address to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, Goundar pointed out the need for rehabilitation and flexible work arrangements for teachers recovering from injuries. He stressed the importance of retaining skilled educators, stating, “We cannot lose teachers at this stage. The shortage currently stands at around five to six hundred in primary education, which is a substantial number.”

Moreover, Goundar highlighted the plight of many secondary school graduates working in primary institutions but being classified as unqualified due to salary Band D restrictions, which leads to lower pay. He has called for fair compensation for these graduates, recognizing their contribution to filling critical roles within the education system.

This issue has been echoed in reports from previous months, where it was also noted that many teachers are leaving the profession for better opportunities abroad. For instance, the Fijian Teachers Association reported 580 unfilled positions at the primary level, exacerbating the existing shortages. The Fijian educational system is under strain, facing overcrowded classrooms and under-resourced facilities, affecting overall educational quality and teacher well-being.

Overall, the continued advocacy for improved working conditions, fair pay, and protective policies shows a concerted effort by the FTU and educators to ensure that both teachers and students receive the best possible support. As discussions progress, there is hope that these necessary reforms will help create a more sustainable and supportive educational environment in Fiji, benefiting all stakeholders in the long term.
