Fiji’s Education Crisis: Is a Fee Hike Coming Amidst Rising Living Costs?

The Shadow Minister for Justice, Ketan Lal, is urging universities to refrain from raising fees for the upcoming academic year, highlighting the significant financial strain that rising living costs are placing on Fijian families. Lal argues that while reviews of university fees are standard practice, now is not the appropriate time to implement such changes given the ongoing economic challenges faced by many citizens.

He emphasized that although the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Scheme (TSLS) exists to assist students, numerous individuals may opt for private education due to the stringent bond requirements set by the Government. For these students, any increase in fees could create an overwhelming financial burden.

Lal criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s declaration of 2025 as a “special year,” questioning how such claims can be reconciled with the reality of families struggling to afford basic necessities and the increasing costs of education. He stated that mere words are insufficient to address the difficulties faced by Fijians, calling for concrete actions to enhance their quality of life.

Moreover, Lal urged universities to demonstrate empathy and support for students and their families by canceling any intended fee hikes.
